NC500 Stops
Every must-visit place along the North Coast 500, organised by region.
Inverness & Black Isle
Inverness
Your NC500 starts here. Inverness is the Highland capital — stock up, fuel up, and get your last decent coffee for a while.
Black Isle
Not an island. Home to the best wild dolphin watching in Britain, plus craft beer, quiet beaches, and a tiny car ferry.
Dingwall
A proper Highland market town with Viking roots. Not flashy, but a useful stop with real character and good views.
East Coast
Tain
Scotland's oldest royal burgh. Home to Glenmorangie, a cracking museum, and views across the Dornoch Firth to die for.
Dunrobin Castle
A French chateau in the Scottish Highlands. 189 rooms, falconry displays, and Versailles-style gardens overlooking the sea.
Helmsdale
Tiny fishing village, huge personality. Gold panning, an award-winning museum, and possibly Scotland's most eccentric chip shop.
Wick
Former herring capital of Europe. Great whisky distillery, 330 cliff-cut steps, and a museum that'll keep you way longer than planned.
North Coast
John o' Groats
The famous signpost at mainland Britain's top-right corner. Touristy? Yes. Will you regret skipping it? Also yes.
Duncansby Head
Forget the signpost — this is the real showstopper. Towering sea stacks, puffins, and cliffs that'll make your knees wobble.
Dunnet Head
The actual most northerly point of mainland Britain. Not John o' Groats — here. 100-metre cliffs, puffins, and proper edge-of-the-world vibes.
Thurso
Britain's most northerly mainland town. World-class surfing, the Queen Mum's castle, and your last proper supermarket for a while.
Bettyhill
Caribbean-white beach, heartbreaking Clearances museum, and a Pictish stone that's been standing since the Vikings. Remote and real.
Tongue
A tiny village dwarfed by Ben Loyal, with a causeway crossing, ruined castle, and some of Scotland's emptiest beaches.
Durness
Smoo Cave, Caribbean-blue beaches, and the wild trip to Cape Wrath. This is the NC500's north-west corner and it's extraordinary.
West Coast
Scourie
Gateway to Handa Island's 100,000 seabirds. Three-billion-year-old rock, hill lochs, and a quiet beach that asks nothing of you.
Lochinver
Award-winning pies, the impossible silhouette of Suilven, and Achmelvich Beach. For many, this is where the NC500 peaks.
Applecross
Britain's highest road pass, Scotland's best pub, and a sunset over Skye. The perfect final stop before heading home.
Wester Ross
Ullapool
The liveliest town on the west coast. Colourful harbour, live ceilidhs, Summer Isles boat trips, and fish and chips on the pier.
Gairloch
Sandy beaches, whale watching from shore, and Inverewe Garden defying the latitude. Wester Ross at its most rewarding.
Torridon
Billion-year-old mountains, ancient pine forest, and the most dramatic drive in Britain. This is the NC500's emotional peak.
