Gairloch

Gairloch is spread along a sheltered sea loch in the heart of Wester Ross, and it’s one of those places that just keeps giving. Beaches, mountains, a world-class garden, and genuine whale watching from the shore. The views across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides are constant, and the combination of sea and mountain light here drives photographers slightly mad.

What to See

Big Sand, a couple of miles north, is a long sweep of golden sand backed by dunes. Shallow water, proper beach, great for a paddle or a bracing swim. Further north, Red Point is reached by a single-track road and rewards the effort with red-tinged sand and views to Skye and the islands. Both beaches are quiet even in peak summer.

Whale and dolphin watching boat trips run from the harbour in summer. Minke whales, common dolphins, porpoises, and basking sharks all frequent these waters. Even from the shore with binoculars, you’ve got a decent chance. The Gairloch Marine Life Centre (if still running) can tell you what’s been spotted recently.

Inverewe Garden, a few miles south, is extraordinary. Osgood Mackenzie created it from 1862 on a barren, windswept peninsula. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, it now grows Himalayan rhododendrons, Tasmanian eucalyptus, and South African plants. At this latitude. It shouldn’t work, but it does spectacularly.

The Gairloch Heritage Museum won Scotland’s Museum of the Year and it’s easy to see why. Prehistory to present day, well-told and engaging.

Where to Eat

The Old Inn at Flowerdale is a proper pub with decent food, a beer garden, and live music some evenings. The Mountain Coffee Company does excellent coffee and cakes. The Badachro Inn, across the loch in a tiny hamlet, is worth the detour — waterside tables, good seafood, and a lovely location.

Getting There & Parking

On the A832, which forms part of the NC500 through Wester Ross. Petrol station, several shops, and accommodation from campsites to small hotels. Parking at beaches and in the village.

Insider Tips

The Badachro Inn is a genuine hidden gem. Tucked away on the south side of the loch, reached by a minor road, with tables right on the water. It’s a proper locals’ pub that happens to do excellent food. Don’t miss it.

If you have one clear day in Wester Ross, split it between Inverewe Garden in the morning and Big Sand beach in the afternoon. The garden needs about two hours, and the beach deserves whatever time the weather gives you.

The road from Gairloch south to Torridon through Kinlochewe is where the landscape shifts from coastal to mountain. You’ll know when it happens. The mountains get bigger, darker, older. It’s like driving into a different geological era. Because you are.
