Can we talk about passing place etiquette? The number of people I see pulling into passing places on the wrong side, or worse, using them to park, is infuriating. Here are the rules for newcomers.

The golden rule: if the passing place is on YOUR side, pull in. If it's on the other side, stop and let the oncoming vehicle pull in. NEVER park in passing places. Local delivery vans and emergency services need them.

Also: let faster traffic pass. If you've got a queue behind you, pull into the next passing place and wave them through. It's common courtesy and locals really appreciate it.

The road from Applecross to Shieldaig is the worst for this. Beautiful road but you get convoys of campervans with nobody willing to let others past. Please use the passing places, people!

A wave of thanks goes a long way too. The famous Highland wave - just lift your fingers off the steering wheel. It's a lovely tradition and makes the single tracks feel friendly rather than stressful.

As a campervan driver: I know we get a bad reputation but most of us do try. The problem is when you're in a 6-metre van and there's literally nowhere to pull in for half a mile. Patience all round please.
