Right, this is the thread I wish existed before my first NC500 trip. Share your best midge survival tips. I'll start: Avon Skin So Soft is genuinely more effective than most actual repellents.

Midge head nets look ridiculous but they are an absolute game-changer. I wouldn't wild camp in July without one. Get the ones that fit over a hat so they sit away from your face.

If you're in a van, get midge screens for the doors. We fitted magnetic ones and it made all the difference. Without them you literally can't open the doors on a still evening.

Smidge repellent is the one. It actually works and doesn't smell as weird as Skin So Soft. Available in most outdoor shops and even some petrol stations up here.

Best tip: check the midge forecast on the Scottish Midge Forecast website before you plan each day. If it's level 4 or 5, stay near the coast where the breeze keeps them away.

Light-coloured clothing helps. They're attracted to dark colours apparently. Also, they can't fly in wind above 5mph, so pick breezy spots for picnics.

As a cyclist: they're not a problem when you're moving. It's when you stop that they descend. I've learned to eat lunch at exposed, windy spots rather than sheltered glens.
