PSA for first-timers: fuel stations are few and far between on the NC500. Don't assume you'll find one when you need one. Fill up at every opportunity!

The longest gap is between Durness and Tongue on the north coast - there's nothing. And between Lochinver and Ullapool. Fill up in every town. Prices are higher than the south but running out is worse.

Key fuel stops: Inverness (cheapest), Wick, Thurso, Tongue (small but it's there), Durness, Lochinver, Ullapool, Gairloch, Lochcarron. Don't skip any of them.

Also check opening hours! Some of the smaller stations close at 6pm and don't open on Sundays. The ones that are open 24/7 usually have card payment at the pump.
