Thinking of doing the NC500 with our grandchildren (ages 3 and 5). Is it realistic or will the long drives be too much for wee ones? Any tips from parents who've done it?

We did it with a 4-year-old and it was great! Key is to keep driving days short - no more than 2 hours of actual driving. Stop at every beach, let them throw stones and build sandcastles. They loved it.

Smoo Cave is brilliant for kids. They love the dark cave and the waterfall inside. It feels like a real adventure. The boat trip into the inner cave is magical for wee ones.

The beaches up there are incredible for kids - shallow water, white sand, no crowds. Achmelvich, Clashnessie, and Balnakeil are all perfect. Bring wetsuits and they'll be happy for hours.

Take the ferry to Handa Island if they're old enough to walk the path. Our kids talked about the puffins for months afterwards. Make sure they're happy on boats first though!
